45 Cal Virginia Rifle by Joe Schell

Photos supplied by Joe Schell.

  1. This is a very nice, honest looking, elegant early southern rifle. Subtle influences from a number of early guns, but it does not look like a copy of any particular rifle. I really like it. Great lines, just enough decoration and finish details to make it stand out and nothing is overdone. Could easily see a piece like this being carried by one of Morgan's riflemen. Nice work.

  2. I agree with Guy, this is a really elegant early rifle gun. And that piece of maple looks like one that was not fun to work. I particularly like your carving choices, especially the tang molding and your treatment of the butt plate tang.
What are the length and dimensions of the barrel?
