2012 CLA Live Auction: “Old Hickory Salt Horn" by Harris Maupin
During the War of 1812, the extraordinary acts of heroism and bravery of many American patriots became legendary and their names were entered into the pages of history. For many, even after the war, these deeds served to advance their careers in ways they probably never dreamed of. The feats of General Andrew Jackson, especially at the Battle of New Orleans, successfully propelled his political career to the very heights of presidency the United States itself.
His was a house hold name, and his likeness was instantly recognizable by Americans everywhere. The Contemporary Longrifle Association is fortunate indeed that a craftsman as talented as Harris Maupin of Hillsboro Missouri carved that likeness onto a special “Old Hickory, Hero of New Orleans” salt horn and presented it to us for our special “War of 1812 Live Auction”.
Looking at this little treasure, you too will recognize General Jackson at once, just as you will recognize that it is true piece of contemporary American folk art at its finest. The CLA is honored to offer this fine one of a kind carving to you at this year’s event, and hope that you will join us as we commemorate the War of 1812 and celebrate our shared American heritage.

American Composite Gun by Ken Gahagan, c. 1750-1765
The barrel is a 46 1/2" oct. to round 12 ga smoothbore by Ed Rayl. The lock is a copy of the original by The Rifle Shoppe. All the rest of the hardware was hand made by the maker as per the original. Stock is curly maple stained with nitric acid, hand scraped and burnished with an antique finish applied.

Golden Age Rifle by Nicholas Beyer
This rifle has a 46-1/2" inch oct to rnd smooth bore bbl signed in script by N. Beyer. The 4-pc brass engraved patch box is similar to rifle No. 93 in Kindig and the patch box latch is riveted in the upper corner of the lid with the release in the butt plate. The butt carving on the cheek piece side, silver cheek star and brass side plate are also identical to Kindig’s rifle No. 93. The relief carving at the tang is sharp and crisp and includes a rnd inlay secured by four pins. This is a clean, honest N. Beyer rifle in attic condition which has had no restoration. N. Beyer was one of the most prolific of the better rifle makers who worked as a gunsmith in Dauphin County circa 1807 – 1810. The ramrod pipes on this rifle are short with molded ends and the forward trigger guard extension ends with two fixed lines that form a molding. CONDITION: This is a clean, honest N. Beyer rifle in attic condition which has had no restoration and shows only signs of normal wear and use. The front bbl pin is missing and there are several losses of wood on both sides along the barrel and around bbl pins. There is an old period metal repair between the nose cap and the front ramrod pipe. A small bit of wood is missing over the front of the lock plate.
