Rifles of Colonial America, Volume 1, 2nd Edition is an in-depth photographic study of longrifles and gunmaking in the Colonial, Revolutionary, and post-Revolutionary periods brought together many rifles with what was known about individual gunmakers and regional “schools” or styles of work. For each of the 92 rifles treated, there are ten or more detailed photographs. A description of each rifle accompanies the photographs, and many important dimensions are given. The text covers the complex subject of the evolution of the baroque and rococo art that adorns these rifles. 

 

CCTP & Shumway Publisher have produced this expanded, Second Edition, with many of the rifles now photographed in full color for enhanced quality and detail. Where color photographs were not available, the black & white originals were re-scanned and enhanced. A great deal of new research has been added, along with ten previously unpublished rifles. Much of this new information was supplied by co-author Robert P. Lienemann, well-known expert on these rifles, along with other noted collectors & researchers. 

 

George Shumway published his monumental, two-volume Rifles of Colonial America, with the goal the books would encourage further research and bring to light additional early rifles. This second volume continues his 50-year study concentrating on regional characteristics of professionally made powder horns from the southern US.  It has been significantly augmented by collaboration and cooperation with other collectors, students, and museums. The focus of Volume II is on powder horns of the south including North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. 

This volume will be hardbound with approximately 320 pages, over 140 powder horns featured and over 600 full color images. Each horn will be illustrated, measured in multiple parameters and the various materials and woods identified.  Then, pertinent history and biographical information will be included, as well as an analysis of the horn and its origin.

“Kentucky Rifles of the Great Smoky Mountains”

The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is 3/4 mile east of traffic light at the Highway 321 and 73 intersection towards the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in Townsend, Tennessee.

This exhibit goes until October 25, 2018. If you can't make it to Tennessee then the book will be a great addition to your library. The book contains all the rifles, pistols and hunting pouches in the exhibit.

The photography in the book is by Kenneth Orr with the front and back covers by Randal. The Kentucky Rifle Foundation was a sponsor of this exhibit.

The 2018 Tennessee Kentucky Rifle Show had a display this past year, "Brothers in Arms" which featured several rifles and 2 pistols that are in "Kentucky Rifles of the Great Smoky Mountains" book and are in the exhibit.

The "Bear Pistol" was part of the exhibit and the book. This pistol was also on display at the Tennessee Kentucky Rifle Show.
