2021 CLA Live Auction: Knife, Bag, and Horn Set by Adam Daub, Daniel Boehringer, and Henry Bowman

 

Quality hunting rigs are a perennial favorite with collectors and shooters, and this year’s CLF Fundraising Auction features a visually stunning set created by the artistic trio of Adam Daub, Daniel Boehringer, and Henry Bowman.

 

The rig is built around a heart shaped bag by Daniel Boehringer. He describes it as a southern style bag made of 2-3 oz. vegetable tanned leather. Dyed with walnut hulls and a bit of darker dye for more aging, the bag sports a deep, rich patina. The entire piece is entirely sewn by hand with waxed linen thread. The underside of the flap is covered with dyed pillow ticking.

 

The back of the bag carries an integral sheath for an outstanding knife by bladesmith Adam Daub. Daub forges fierce blades and this example is no exception. Made from 5160 steel, the knife carries a nicely shaped whitetail antler handle and sports a poured pewter bolster. Daub also contributed the necessary tools for a black powder rig, including an antler powder measure, pan brush made from brass and horse hair, and a steel vent pick. An enthusiastic member of the CLA, Daub is garnering a good bit of attention for his robust forged blades. “The annual show”, he explains, “has done a lot for me and I want to give back.”

 

The set is accompanied by a unique offering for the auction, a double horn by craftsman Henry Bowman. This intriguing piece is based on a surviving nineteenth century original. The two horns are from the same animal and form a single cavity. A lathe-turned tip made from whitetail deer antler adorns each horn tip. Only one tip serves as a functional spout. The joint of the two horns is sealed and decorated with a white horn band.

2020 CLA Live Auction: LONG KNIFE By Adam Daub

Length: 15 ½”   Blade: 10 ½”

Any knife maker will tell you, the longer the blade, the more care you have to take at every step in the process.  Forging, hardening, tempering need all to be right on to avoid cracks, warps, and brittle spots.  When you do everything right you get one like Adam Daub has donated to this year’s fund raising auction. 

The legendary knife of the American frontiersman, (hence the birth of the term “Long Knife”), these blades are also useful for butchering and chopping.  With one hand on the blade and the other on the handle it is a drawknife for shaving greenwood.

This is a fine looking knife with very good lines.  The poured pewter bolster and antler handle compliment the blade.  The half-tang is double pinned to the crown antler handle. The brain-tanned deer hide sheath has a heavy leather liner to safely hold the blade. 

This is a very wicked looking long knife for a Revolutionary War style rig – or for the woods runner, “Long Knife”.
