Morphy Auctions: Gary Birch Hunting Pouch and Powder Horn

This fine ensemble includes a well-engraved powder horn of 9-1/2" across the bow with an engraved priming horn by the same hand measuring about 3-1/2". The cone-shaped spout of the large horn has a scalloped edge and the main body has a scalloped edge as well. The horn is engraved with folk art flowers and two detailed Indians, one with a large head dress. There is also a large running buck and "Miami" in script. Towards the convex wooden plug, the horn is inscribed "M Birch 81". The small priming horn is engraved en suite with flowers, a portrait of a gentleman, and a crescent moon with face. Horn is inscribed "MB 81". Other accessories include a horsehair pan brush, a tin powder measure, a decorated antler powder measure, and an iron touch hole pick with antler sheath. The brown leather bag features a shaped lid with sinew-stitched lighter borders. The wide original strap has a large hand-forged iron buckle with gadrooning on the front.

CONDITION: Very good, horns retain a pleasing patina and are excellent. Straps are all in very good condition. Bag very good showing some surface cracks and minor crazing. A fantastic and complete hunting bag ensemble, rarely found in this condition. DMG Note: the 81 indicates the bag was made in 1981 per Gary's normal signing. JR
