Steve's work is always a joy to see. One of the first of Hershel's followers, Steve puts his own spin on the style. The patchbox on this gun is wonderful - simple in design, but so many neat subtle details tucked away into, and around it - lots of little interesting details tucked away all over this rifle - like the front sight. A really nice example of perfectly executed, but restrained decoration that fits the style of gun.
These iron mounted, stepped wrist (or "stepped toe" as Wallace Gusler terms them") have become one of my favorite styles of longrifle.
Not sure I'm doing this right. I have the very first Steve Davis rifle he built sorry I have to sell it but. I am dying. It's featured in Baird's buckskin report 50 Cal swamp special getz 34" barrel syler lock all iron Jaeger. Wooden patch box. 3/9/22 my first anouncement.
When Robert Weil started collecting images for the Contemporary Makers book in 1973 the challenge to record contemporary gun work was daunting. Gathering material was difficult and time consuming. Few makers thought that there was any value in published documentation of their work. Electronic publishing has changed all that. Having a website or having one's work available to view on the internet is becoming a necessity. In spite of all the potential to finally have a true overview of what's being produced by the artists of today, a great deal of work still remains covered up and basically unknown. Our role is to make an effort to document some portion of what’s going on today. To comment on the established makers and to uncover the unknown. We welcome your comments and suggestions and look to you our readers to make us aware of the talented makers out there. Art and Jan Riser Robert Weil and The Makers
