Morphy Auction: PLEASING NAUTICALLY ENGRAVED ARCHITECTURAL REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA POWDER HORN from the Collection of Louie Parker

Measures about 13 - 1/2" across the bow, including the wooden knob. Architectural 3-stage spout section. The main portion has a scalloped upper edge. The engraved decorations on the horn include three large battleships, one with 26 guns. The smallest has four fish below; two appear upright with open mouths biting the ship, and two are facing down with open mouths. The largest ship, in the center, has extensive and detailed rigging and 3 Union Jack flags. There is also an engraved tree (Liberty Tree?). There are pine trees around the base and a large shaded upside-down heart. The cartouche has the inscribed letters "GIHN AMEH" and a darker "TC" done with a different hand. Turned wooden plug of cherry, with a large threaded wooden knob of the artillery type.

CONDITION: Retains a pleasing honey patina with some scattered marks. Plug has a couple of hairline age cracks and minor chips. An interesting and cryptic horn worthy of further research and interpretation.

From the Louie Parker Collection.
