Early Virginia Rifle by Lowell Haarer

This .50 caliber Early Virginia rifle has a Rice 42 inch swamped barrel and a Chamber Deluxe Siler lock.  The Virginia style buttplate and triggerguard are castings, but the patchbox, toeplate, sideplate and rod pipes are all handmade.  The pewter muzzlecap was formed in place.  The metal engraving was done by hand with hammer and graver.  The silver wire sets off the forearm with a nice touch.  The silver wire cross sets off the pierced heart in the patchbox and also makes a statement of faith in Christ.  The wood carving was done in a mixture of raised and incised carving.
This gun was made for our son's father-in-law.  He is tickled pink.  He said it is way more than he could envision it being.
As I began to walk away, Lowell said, "I like all my rifles but somehow this rifle and I have a kindred spirit."  That kind of says it all for this rifle.

  1. I'm sitting here sick as a dog looking at these guns. I'm even more sick knowing I will never see my Virginia rifle again. My son sold it to buy drugs last year. My heart is broken for the theft, his ability to steal from his old man, and mostly because he chose a lifestyle that hurts everyone around him. He is currently doing hard time for his decisions and I hope he changes his life for the better. I would gladly pass on my favorite flintlock to see a happy successful son who has so much to live for. For now, I'm out a son and one of my few favorite possessions. I would love another Virginia but finding an equal to what I had would be a challenge. This one is real close to what I had. Maybe someday.... This hurts to look at because of what it reminds me of losing in children and stuff. Regardless. It's absolutely beautiful.
