Large Powder Flask in the European style by Carl Dumke

It has an integral valve and mechanical mechanism made of horn and fitted to the body by a figured walnut housing. The body is comprised of a horn band sandwiched between figured walnut panels which are adorned with European stag rosette rounds, scrimshawed with a fleeing boar on the obverse and a oak wealth on the reverse. The flask hangs on a braided leather strap and is attached by turned and carved antler rings by a brass oak leaf, rat-tail hangers. The cord joins beneath the flask with a leather Spanish knot ending in turned horn and boar hair tassels.

Sgian Dubh and Sheath by Carl Dumke

This is a Scottish knife called a sgian dubh and is typically worn in one's sock just below the hem of the kilt.  The blade is damascus steel. The bolster is red deer (European elk). The handle is black horn with leather Spanish knots. The pommel is sterling silver with a green jasper stone from Scotland. The trefoil design is also sterling with steel pins. The sheath is dyed black leather with an attached flat-horn shield. My family Scottish crest has a boar, so that is what is engraved on the shield with a stipple design to highlight the engraved boar.

Horn Pie Crimper by Carl Dumke

The inspiration behind this piece comes from the whaling era where sailors would create these trinkets to sell upon their return to shore after the voyage. The sea horse is carved black buffalo horn. The turned, shaped wheel has a wavy pattern used to create a decorative edge on pie or dumpling crusts and is made from antler rosette. The carved "unicorn" horn is turned from antler tine and then a spiral is carved along the length. The eyes (smallest I have ever turned) are made of bone and then a decorative "x" was cut on edge to add a nice detail to the eye.

European Style Powder Flask by Carl Dumke

This was one of my submissions for Master Horner in the HCH.

This is a powder flask in the European style. The spout and internal valve are all turned horn. The flask has a horn spring and cam that will keep the valve open when the key is turned and closed if it reversed. The body is a turned horn ring sandwiched between turned tiger maple panels. On the side is a hanger made of brass in the shape of an oak leaf with a rat-tail curl to hold the turned and rope-carved red-deer antler tine. The spout plug is a piece of antler rosette affixed to the body with a brass chain. The woven leather carrying strap is joined at the bottom with a Spanish knot. At the ends are two turned horn bells with tufts of red deer main fur. The front panel is of a european design turned horn and engraved with a young red deer. The reverse is another turned and engraved horn panel with a blowing horn, my maker's mark and the year.

Fractur Polychrome Powder Horn by Carl Dumke

This is a modern interpretation of a Pennsylvania horn inspired by Fractur polychrome designs from the period.  The design has a double eagle "distlefink" with a heart design.  On either side of the heart are the initials for myself and my wife.  On the reverse is a rooster sitting upon one of many multitudes of floral designs.  The engraving The spout and final are turned antler.  I used similar colors used in many examples of fractur art.  It took a while to cut all the lines to accept the ink.  I used Winsor-Newton inks that have shellac in them--helps to aid in fast drying and are waterproof.  The wood plug is dark-stained tiger maple and has an carved Roman key design.  The threaded antler finial fits nicely into the plug for filling with powder.  I just thought of doing something different.
