Southern Ohio Artisan Workshops - Traditional Skills Week - May 2023

  

Join us in the scenic, secluded hills of Southern Ohio for our annual Traditional Skills Week!  Choose a class from our selection of hands - on workshops focusing on a variety of early crafts.  Class prices include onsite meals and lodging.  Participants must be 18 years old or accompanied by an adult student.

Document Box Workshop

4 day workshop. $640 class fee includes onsite meals and lodging. An additional $50 materials fee will pay for wood, leather, fabric, brass tacks and all required hardware. A tool list will be supplied.


Powder Horn Workshop
with Clinton Byers    
May 11-13, 2023 

Beginners Welcome!
3 day workshop. $480 class fee includes onsite meals and lodging.  There is an additional materials fee (approximately $30) to be paid to your instructor at class.  
 
Learn how to handcraft a traditional styled powderhorn with HCH Master Horner, Clinton Byers!  Historically, this style of powderhorn can be found from New England to Georgia and from the mid-18th century to the early 20th century. This is an appropriate powderhorn to pair with any flintlock or percussion rifle.

Using a variety of basic hand tools including files, rasps, knives, scrapers and a drill, each student will experience the artistic process of creating their own powderhorn in a traditional manner. Instruction will focus on the marriage of form and function, with the goal of creating an heirloom quality powderhorn that can be carried and used with confidence.

Prior horn making or woodworking experience are not needed. This class is designed with the beginning horn maker in mind. The class will teach horn carving techniques and the principles behind this classic design. Several original and contemporary examples will be on hand to examine. All raw materials including horn and wood will be provided.  Work stations are provided.  Students will need to bring their own hand tools.  A List of required tools will be provided.

Bowie Knife Workshop

with Steve Auvenshine

4 day workshop. $640 class fee includes onsite meals and lodging.  An additional $20 materials fee to be paid to your instructor at class.  Tools required.

Join well known artisan bladesmith Steve Auvenshine in this four day hands -on  workshop and learn the intricacies of making your own frame handled Bowie Knife.

Weaving Workshop 

with Kerry Masarik 

May 11-13, 2023


3 day workshop. $480 class fee includes onsite meals and lodging.  $5 materials fee.


Want to expand your weaving skills using your inkle loom? Join weaver Kerry Masarik, of Horn and Fiber in a 3 day workshop exploring double weave, pick up and weft faced techniques using an inkle loom!

Prerequisite: Students should be able to independently warp an inkle loom for standard warp faced weaving.

Bowmaking Workshop 
with Matt Weatherholtz 
May 11-13, 2023

3 day workshop, beginners welcome!  $480 class fee includes onsite meals and lodging. Additional $50 materials fee for a bow stave and bowstring material.

Join well known primitive technologies artist Matt Weatherholtz and learn how to how to shape, tiller and finish your own fully functional traditional longbow.  You'll also learn how to make a 2 ply Flemish twist bowstring.  All necessary woodworking tools will be provided.
