This is a bench copy of an S. Hawken that would date in the mid eighteen fifties .I copied this rifle as close as I was capable ,with a couple exceptions . One being the animal on the patch box . The orginal patch box had a folk art bird dog on point , that I could not bring myself to copy ., so I gave it a bull buffalo with an attitude. The lock treatment is different to what is most commonly seen ,as is the spur trigger guard, but there are a few others known . The cleaning jag seen in the open patch box was copied after one found in another Hawken box and is believed to be a product of the Hawken Shop.
The overall length is 53 " with a 36" 54 caliber bbl. 1 1/8 at breech tapers to 1 "Stocked in walnut with silver inlays .
Photos supplied by Louie Parker.
The dog engraved on the original Hawken rifle that this was coppied from is not a bird dog but a hunting dog that a lot of the early hunters and explorers such as Daniel Boone and many others often had with them.Although I do like the BUFFALO better.
