Warclub: Early 18th century ball head type with animal effigy (Otter)Material: Sugar maple root stock
Inlay of Quahog clam and Lightening Whelk shell set in spruce gum (Eyes and entire length of effigy back) (The wampum type inlay is set as commonly found on many 17th and 18th century examples and ground flat.)
Dimensions: 21 in. overall length 3 in. ball 1-1/2in. x 5/8in. cross section (at widest point)
This club is based on 3 separate examples in European and Canadian collections and is proportionate to other period examples in weight an dimension. Incised lines and "heron" effigy may represent identifying marks (tattoos) and or clan affiliation of an owner. W.O.
