Pipe Ax by William Buchele

This piece was made late 50-60's time period. The wood is hard curly maple with the grain as figured as maple comes with tobacco stain. The tomahawk head was Bills' design based on early English pipe axes, fitted with a brass engraved bowl, teepees and long stem pipes. The blade has Rococo designs engraved as well. The handle has 2 silver arrows with engraved borders. There is a 3 piece silver mouthpiece. Between the 2 arrows is a classic Federal style finely engraved eagle with wings spread flanked by silver wire inlay. The overall length is 17 inches and the head is 6 5/8 long.

William Buchele Rifle at Cowan's Auction

.45 cal., 42" octagonal barrel. German silver front sight blade; notched fixed rear sight. Top of barrel signed W. Buchele. Finely carved curly maple stock with German silver and copper inlays featuring a floral and vine pattern. Nice German silver eagle and wire work on cheek piece; banner in eagle's talons We Owe Allegiance to No Crown. Rear of stock is nicely carved with two Indians running and wielding ball-headed clubs. Brass furniture and four-piece patch box featuring a liberty bell and dated 1776. Lockplate signed Buchele. Pierced pig-tail trigger. Rifle is housed in a well-constructed wood case.

William Buchele Powder Horn

The horn measures 13 inches by 2 5/8 inches. The brass fittings appear to be handmade. The engrailment is equisitely carved. The theme is the War of 1812. It has a map of Lake Erie scrimshawed on one side and a scene of Commodore O H Perry and men in a rowboat beautifully relief carved on the other...with the immortal words "Don't give up the ship" immediately above. The end cap has a bust of Commodore Perry relief carved in burl maple. The horn is signed "Wm. Buchele Powderhorn Made by him" and also engraved "Buchele" on the brass fitting below the spout.

Does anyone know about any other Buchele horns?

Recreating The Kentucky Rifle by William Buchele. Buchele also collaborated with Peter Alexander and George Shumway to co-author "Recreating the American Longrifle" in 1970.
