Valley Forge: Washington's Headquarters
At various times during the encampment this garret was used as sleeping quarters for many of the house's inhabitants. There is an account of aide-de-camp John Laurens rising in the morning and hitting his head on the low ceiling. Later, a log cabin was added to provide more sleeping space for the aides-de-camp. After that point, free and enslaved servants, who had few possessions and scant furnishing, may have slept here.
