Regimental Uniform Coat of Colonel Peter Gansevoort, Jr.

This Continental Army uniform coat was worn by Colonel Peter Gansevoort, Jr. of the 3rd Regiment of the New York Continental Line. He wore this coat during his command of Fort Stanwix, New York in 1777.

During the first few years of the war substantial stocks of uniforms were made in such centers as Philadelphia, Baltimore and Charleston. These uniforms were made with locally woven cloth or from cloth imported from France.

Superfine blue wool, lined with linen and faced with red trim. It has silver civilian patterned buttons backed with bone and a silver lace on the buttonholes.

American made composite musket, .75 caliber. This gun is assembled with a barrel bearing London proofmarks, a lock bearing French marks, and the trigger and stock of an American manufacturer.

American Revolution Militia Cartridge Box

This came from the George Neuman Collection and still has his tag with description of this box. It is constructed of tarred linen nailed to a curved wood block. It has holes for 8 cartridges. The flap folds over the front and has a hole to close it using a brad on the front. There are leather loops on the side for a thin sling. A red fabric has been glued to the inside. While small is it quite interesting and shows some of the unique craftsmanship of the period.
