Carved Bone Jesuit Crucifix at Cowan's Auction


Provenance:Descended through a prominent Halifax family
Condition:
Warm patina; soft surface; tactile piece.

An example of a Mi'kmaq or Maliseet carved crucifix is curated within the collection of Musee McCord (No. M3). http://collections.musee-mccord.qc.ca/fr/collection/artefacts/M3 (accessed February 14, 2019).
In an article written by Ted Brasser, he notes the similarities of these crosses to types made by the Irish ca 1723-1776, and described as "Penal Crosses".
