CLF 2022 Auction: Bag, Horn, and Tomahawk Set by Lawrence Fiorillo, Todd Hambrick, and Chad Matthews

 

This set, made by Lawrence Fiorillo, Todd Hambrick and Chad Matthews, was created to represent the backcountry in the colonial period.  The project drew its inspiration from Todd Hambrick’s powder horn.  The horn is a close copy of an original currently in the possession of Mel Hankla.  The horn is believed to be from the French and Indian War era.  This information inspired us to attempt to recreate a kit that a backwoods colonial might have carried off to war. The bag is made from cowhide and aged to show years of use and abuse.  It is a simple two-piece bag.  The charger is river cane and throws about 55 grains. Chad’s spike hawk is a copy of an original dated from the mid-18th century.

2021 CLA Live Auction: Bag and Horn Set by Lawrence Fiorillo and Todd Hambrick

 

A reliable bag and horn are necessities for any black powder shooter, and the artistic team of Lawrence Fiorillo and Todd Hambrick have produced an outstanding rig for this year’s CLF Fundraising Auction.

This fine-looking and durable outfit is sure to last. Fiorillo’s hunting pouch is made of vegetable tanned cowhide and measures 7 ½ inches wide by 8 ½ inches deep. It has an inner pocket and is fully welted with a 1½ inch gusset. The leather for this bag was aged to reflect long years of use, and was given protective coats of pure Neatsfoot oil, followed by a final application of a beeswax and bear grease. Fiorillo also made the rig’s aged brass powder measure, which accommodates about 65 grains.

Todd Hambrick made this set’s vent pick and pan brush, which were made from horn and horsehair. His primary contribution to this rig, however, is a striking powder horn. This tastefully aged horn features an engrailed edge, scrimshaw, and a row of robust brass tacks around the bottom edge.

CLF Auction Artist of the Day: Lawrence Fiorillo, Todd Hambrick and Casey McClure

 

2020 CLA Live Auction: EARLY 19TH CENTURY HUNTING POUCH SET By Lawrence Fiorillo, Todd Hambrick, Casey McClure

Dimensions: 8 ½” wide x 9” high

Lawrence Fiorillo, Todd Hambrick and Casey McClure have donated this great looking Hunting set with a homespun air to this year’s auction.  Created around a bark tanned, ample sized hunting pouch this rig is loaded with fine touches.  The finely fringed trim on the bag, the rolled edge and the lined flap show Larry's leather working skills.  The leather strap has a rawhide lined sheath for Casey’s hand forged knife.  The knife on the pouch strap is always a nice feature.  Casey’s knife is exceptional, a finely forged, antler handled working knife in a useful size for all around work (and razor sharp, too).  Todd Hambrick’s horn brings this whole set together and gives it just the right touch of frontier art.  Although the art is period primitive it is well executed.  Fine details abound in this set; note the wrapping on the ends of the horn strap, the poured pewter bolster on the knife, the hand forged buckle and the “hair” fringe on the bag.         

This is a perfect set for a Southern Mountain rifle, an early fur trade percussion rifle or a big old meat on the table smoothbore. The CLF is proud to present this at auction.

2018 CLA Live Auction: Hunting Set by Lawrence Fiorillo and Todd Hambrick

This Eighteenth century style pouch and horn are in the homespun frontier style.  The oak tanned cowhide bag measures ten and a half inches long and 5 and a half inches deep.  It has a simple domed metal button closure and an internal pocket. The waxed hemp strap is wide and should make a comfortable carry. 

This horn is perfect for this bag.  It has charming folk art animal figures and a sturdy construction. There is also a powder measure, and a pan brush of antler.  This is a great set that is artfully aged and intentionally primitive. 

Lawrence Fiorillo and Todd Hambrick have created a horn and bag that speak of the frontier folk, plain simple tastes but a demand for function and a subtle sense of whimsy. This would be great with a smooth bore or a plain workmanlike rifle, perfectly at home with a Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky or Southern Mountain gun.

Lawrence and Todd are new artists for the auction.  We hope to see more of their work in the future
