Georgia Style Powder Horns by Art DeCamp

 

I thought these two photos that show before and after of the same three horns was pretty interesting.  Maybe you'll get a kick out of seeing them.

I'll be teaching a class this coming week at Conner Prairie on how to make these Georgia style banded and pinned-tip horns.  In getting myself prepped for doing the class, I've made several of this type horn, these three being the most recent completions.

I am very much looking forward to the Contemporary Longrifle Association (CLA) show in Lexington, KY next weekend. I've been working hard the last few weeks in my temporary shop to get several horns and other items made for this important show. Here are some photos of all the stuff I have made that will be on my table for sale (mostly) at the show. Note that a few of the horns and loading blocks are already sold.

CLF 2022 Auction: Bag, Horn, and Tomahawk Set by Lawrence Fiorillo, Todd Hambrick, and Chad Matthews

 

This set, made by Lawrence Fiorillo, Todd Hambrick and Chad Matthews, was created to represent the backcountry in the colonial period.  The project drew its inspiration from Todd Hambrick’s powder horn.  The horn is a close copy of an original currently in the possession of Mel Hankla.  The horn is believed to be from the French and Indian War era.  This information inspired us to attempt to recreate a kit that a backwoods colonial might have carried off to war. The bag is made from cowhide and aged to show years of use and abuse.  It is a simple two-piece bag.  The charger is river cane and throws about 55 grains. Chad’s spike hawk is a copy of an original dated from the mid-18th century.

A Collection of Contemporary Artist

Bag maker and friend, Eric Fleisher stopped by this morning to pick up a new powder horn and he brought some "show-and-tell" along.  We put his things and some of mine out on the kitchen table and had a great time examining and talking about each of them.  Included in the photo are pieces by the following various artists: Eric Fleisher and Frank Willis (bags), Roland Cadle, John DeWald, John Proud and Art DeCamp (horns). Herschel House, Scott Somerville, and Mike Wheland (knives), Mark Wheland (buckle) and Paula Hoagland (woven straps).
