Joe Mills Hunting Pouch with Antique Powder Horn from the Gary Ganas Collection

Unique horn and bag combination. Large horn is 15 inches on the outside curve. It is facted at the spout end. Iron staple repairs on the butt end. Left hand carry. The bag is actually attached to the horn strap. It measures 7 inches wide x 6.25 inches deep. Unlined. An adjustable measure and vent pick and brush are attached to the strap. $350.00 shipped in CONUS SOLD

18th Century Shaving Kit by Manfred Schmitz with Razor by Erv Tschanz

I bought at the Fort Frederick Market Fair by Erv Tschanz a hand forge razor and a badger hair shaving brush. Later at home I made a small mirror, soap dish, leather sharpener and a wooden razor box all in the style of the 18th century.

2nd Annual NMLRA Artisan’s Competition & Exhibition

The 2nd Annual Artisan’s Competition & Exhibition, will be held in the NMLRA’s Education Building, September 12 and 13, 2015, at the Fall National Championship Shoot.

If there is one thing black powder muzzleloaders have it’s “stuff,” lots of “stuff!” And the beauty of it is that so much of this “stuff” is hand crafted. These items are a testimony to the passion, skill, and creativity of the maker. The NMLRA is planning a new opportunity for our membership. Have you ever made a powder horn or flask, a possibles bag, a knife, tomahawk, done quill work, made a bowl from wood or clay, or any one of a number of period items that are part of the black powder and muzzleloading experience? Have you taken one of the many hands-on classes offered during the June or September National Shoots and wished you had an opportunity to display your work? If your answer is “yes” to the above, then this  event is something you should add to your things to do list.

Artisan's Competition & Exhibition Registration

Entry Guidelines: The item to be entered must have been made by the participant. The item to be entered must have been created no more than three years before the entry date. The work must be historically appropriate for the 1750 - 1840 black powder muzzleloading period. Only one item may be entered per category. Consideration will be given on the entry form for “youth” (up to seventeen) and “adult” (seventeen and over).

Title: The Nautical Horn

Length: 15 inches

Throat: The throat begins with a carved recessed edge followed by a simple 4 inch round throat

Butt Plug: 3 inch turned oak

Horn Peg: Lathe turned cow horn

Worn: Right Side

Strap Finial: Turned Copper

Inscriptions: “HONI SOIT QUIMAL Y PENSE/ DIEU ET MON DROIT (Shame be to him who thinks evil of it/ God and my Right) “Ship is Moor’d/ Wages Paid/ Welcome Sailor/ To His Maid”

Open-top pouch with Coverlet Strap by Eric Ewing

This open-top pouch is made from several different antique fabrics.  The coverlet strap is backed with cowhide and trimmed with bark-tanned deer hide.  Hemp rope is used to attach the strap to the pouch and is left long for attachment of a powder horn and other items.  The exterior layer of the pouch has woven repairs and is tin-clothed.  There is an antique bone button for closure.
