The Gunmakers Fair at Kempton: Review by Art DeCamp

The show was a great time. Lots of good friends were there. Everyone was very glad to be able to get together again and go the Gunmakers Fair. The new fairgrounds venue is a better location and venue in my opinion than the Dixon's shop area. The group that organized the fair worked very hard, had excellent planning and I thought the event went off without a hitch. I'm sure there were a few glitches, but nothing that took away from the fun.

There were more accoutrement and gun items entered for the judging than the last two years at Dixon's as it seemed that entries had been declining for a few years there. No knock on the event, just it seemed like the judging portion of it was declining. It was great to see the increase in entries this time. Hope it continues next year.

I delivered two horns that had been previously ordered. Got two new horn orders, three restoration jobs on old horns and sold several copies of my PA Horns of the Trade book, plus four copies of the book the CLA did about my horn work. All in all it was a very good event for me. Much better than the previous few years at Dixon's. I am thinking the two-year hiatus created a god bit of pent-up demand.

I think lots of people went home thinking it was a great event.

Mark Wheland and Art DeCamp are doing a seminar at the Gunmakers Fair. Over the last several years I acquired two antique rifling benches that were from the shop of Huntingdon County, PA gunsmith J.S. Johnston (1832-1911).

Both of these rifling benches passed from Art on to Mark, who is now the owner. The first bench is set up to do 7-groove rifling. The second one does 8-grooves. When I got it two years ago, it came with an old wooden produce box that was full of rifling cutters. These would have been used in his shop to freshen old barrels and possibly cut rifling in new rifles that he was making. Both are set up with old rifle barrels as the guide for creating the proper twist in the rifling grooves. Interestingly, one of the guide barrels is an old Lancaster County, PA barrel signed "C. Gumpf".

John S. Johnston learned the gunsmith trade and was in partnership with Joseph Douglass, Jr. (1819-1882) who was likely his uncle. Douglass, Jr. died in 1882 and Johnston carried on the business in McConnellstown, PA until he retired in 1903.

Accouterment and Gun Judging

Accouterments - Frank Willis, Head Judge

Entries will be accepted by the maker only.
Any work not done by the maker must be noted.
Entries will be accepted from 10:00 AM Friday morning to 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon.
All entries must be picked up as soon as the Awards Ceremony is completed (approx. 3:00 PM Sunday). All Entries must remain on the table until then.
All entries must relate to the Long Rifle Culture
If Entry is made by a “junior” (15 yrs. old or younger) and/or is a First-Time entry, please let the attendees know.
