Morphy Auction: EARLY AMERICAN PIPE TOMAHAWK WITH ORIGINAL HAFT from the Louie Parker Collection

For a similar very early Phase I head that is labeled Louden, County, Tennessee, see plate 19 on page 11 in "Tomahawks and Pipe Axes of the American Frontier" by John Baldwin. This tomahawk is also early, probably dating to around 1750. The blacksmith-made iron head measures about 6 - 1/2" overall. The blade measures 3" with a crescent 2-1/8" cutting edge and the blade has probably been shortened at some time. Egg-shaped eye, bowl measures about 1 - 3/8". The original haft measures 16-1/4" and shows traces of a red band painted just below the head. 

CONDITION: Head retains a mostly dark patina with scattered areas of pitting, cutting edge sharpened later but long ago. Haft retains a smooth hand-worn original surface. A very attractive pipe tomahawk.
