This three-piece horn ink well, or penner is similar to several originals from the 18th century that I've been able to examine. The bottom section is a sander, and holds the special sand for preparing paper and helping to dry the ink. The middle section holds the liquid ink, and the long top section is drilled out to hold a small quill pen. When put together, the set becomes a traveling writing set.
