With all the different variations in architecture and details that are possible in creating a rifle or pistol, this item often remains the most overlooked element. There are many fine commercial locks available, and some makers do not feel compelled to individualize them. Original locks were as different from one another as any other part of the gun. So many of the antique locks have come down to us with replaced parts which in some cases are as charming and fitting as those guns assembled from different parts. Some of the commercial lock producers offer alternative cocks, frizzens, oversized plates and feather springs. That is an important step in individualizing a lock. The Rifle Shoppe has a great assortment of castings which will work on many of the commercial locks. They are able to deliver these parts much quicker than a fully assembled lock. An all hand made flintlock is a huge amount of work and though it is a great addition to any piece, it is the external form of the lock that supplies the visual experience.
