Cowan's Auction: Allen Martin

Allen Martin Contemporary Flintlock Kentucky Long Rifle with Possibles Bag, Horn & Accessories

Description: .54 caliber, 49.25" pinned barrel, no S/N. Antiqued pewter patina finish, brass furniture, raised carved stock. Barrel singed " A Martin." Unmarked lock with faceted, bridled and fenced pan and flat faceted swan-neck hammer. Two-piece engraved brass patchbox, raised cheek rest with engraved German silver inlay and surrounded by flowing raised rococo foliate carvings. Similar raised carvings at wrist and entry pipe. Engraved German silver Indian maiden inlay in stock belly, forward of triggerguard. Wood ramrod secured by two thimbles and an entry pipe. A really attractive, very high quality contemporary rifle with flowing lines and wonderful decorative embellishments. Accompanied by a contemporary possibles bag with powder measure, vent pick and brush and horn handled knife in scabbard, and a powder horn.
Condition Report: Fine. Showing little use. Crisp throughout, mechanically functional, fine bore, wood showing minor handling marks. Accessories fine as well, showing the most minor use.

Allen Martin Contemporary Flintlock Kentucky Long Rifle with Silver Inlays


Description: .43 caliber, 47" octagonal wedge-retained barrel, no S/N. Antiqued pewter patina finish on metal, silver mountings, raised carved stock with silver embellishments. Barrel with silver panel engraved " Allen Martin" in script. Flat lock marked " JS Brooks" with waterproof pan and roller frizzen. Four-piece silver patchbox with griffin head finial, silver mountings and decorations throughout. Wood ramrod with two thimbles and an entry pipe. Raised cheek rest with engraved silver eagle inlay, surrounded by flowing raised rococo foliate carvings, with carving of similar patterns at the wrist, tang and entry pipe. Forend with incised line carving. A really spectacular modern long rifle that is a wonderful example of the gunmaker's art.
Condition Report: Fine. Metal with a lightly oxidized antiqued patina. Crisp throughout, mechanically excellent, fine bore, stock with only the most minimal light handling marks.

Cowan's Auctions: "Samuel Baum" Long Rifle by Allen Martin, Mark Wheland & Art DeCamp, plus Target Board, Possibles Bag & Powder Horn


Description: .427" caliber, 45" wedge-retained octagonal barrel, no S/N. Antique gray patina finish, brass furniture and mountings, hardwood stock. Top flat of barrel with three inset brass plaques signed " A Martin", " M Wheland" and " A.D. Camp" in script. Unmarked, flat stepped lock with rounded and fenced bridled iron pan and roller frizzen. Four-piece brass patchbox with simple engraving, two-piece butt plate with separate toe plate, simply engraved brass plate along stock comb, flat two-screw side plate and skeletonize semi-pistol gripped triggerguard. Wood ramrod retained by two faceted pipes with baluster turned ends and matching entry pipe. Stock with an attractive Roman nosed profile with a raised cheek rest with a quarter moon inlay and simple incised decorative patterns on the reverse. A really lovely contemporary rifle from a group of talented craftsmen.

Includes a #68 leather Possibles Bag by E. Fleisher, a contemporary engraved powder horn to Samuel Baum with a German saying that roughly translates to "God alone and to nobody else," and a target board with a period-style note with the loading data for the rifle.
Condition Report: Fine. Metal with an aged pewter patina and scattered surface oxidation. Rifle remains crisp and sharp throughout. Mechanically functional, fine bore. Stock with some light handling marks. Accessories fine as well.
